The English and Wales Placed in the Same Group for 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was overseen by rugby icons such as former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side and their Welsh counterparts will face off in the same group for the World Cup in 2027, setting up a major early clash in Australia. They are joined in Group F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing echoes their memorable meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at England's home ground played a part in the English team's surprise early exit.

Key Pool Pairings

Ireland alongside Scotland also share a pool together, replicating the scenario from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, they claimed a convincing win, with their opponents unable to progress to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, both impressed as surprise packages in the last World Cup, complete that Pool D.

Notably, the victors of these two groups cannot meet holders and world number one the Springboks until the showpiece match, assuming the Springboks win their own group.

Tournament Implications

If the groups play out according to the current world rankings, other leading contenders like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from both the English and Ireland all the way to the championship decider.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on that side of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Draw Major Opener

Tournament hosts Australia find themselves together with their great rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Group A.

The Wallabies will open the tournament in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee match designed to launch the event.

In other groups, reigning champions the Springboks have been paired with the Azzurri, the Lelos and the Oaks. The French team are in a pool with Japan, 2031 hosts the United States and Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Argentina will take on the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and Canada as the tournament grows to twenty-four nations from the 20 who took part in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will feature a round of 16 round for the very first time in the competition's history.

While the victor of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the game's heavyweights initially, they will have to face the runner-up from Pool B – probably Italy – in the last 16.

A total of four of the other six pool winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
