The Black Phone
The director's locked-room horror holds up well even without a follow-up. Located in the late 70s in Denver, a series of kidnappings has rendered the local kids anxious. However, the non-functional line in the room repeatedly calls, with eerie communicators giving advice, as the prescient dreams of his sister Gwen might rescue him. A solid creepfest. The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the conflict between spirituality and money, the victory is clear for Mammon in Michael Showalter's delightfully tacky film adaptation of the disgraced religious broadcaster and her felon spouse. The actor acts as the corrupt Bakker, who states at the beginning, claiming divine approval for wealth. Both individuals commence profiting from the American public's religious faith. It's a spectacle of poor styling, bad makeup and hypocrisy, though Chastain manages to present the real-life figure as a sympathetic figure. Tuesday 14 October, late night, Film4
