Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority cut interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the count of employment gains added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
